Moisture Flow® – Soffit Vent

The world’s first compact Soffit Vent engineered for all household exhaust fans. The 4-inch diameter of the neck can support 4-and 6-inch ductwork with an exterior opening of 12.5 cubic inches, a reducer of 6 inches to 4 inches is required for the 6-inch ductwork. The Soffit Vent was designed for Canada’s cold temperatures and the tropics of extreme temperatures with a range of minus -58 degrees Fahrenheit to 176 degrees Fahrenheit without losing its shape.

In the provided image, an under-eave soffit vent is illustrated. Despite their diverse shapes, these vents serve a common purpose: they terminate the exhaust fan and facilitate the release of extracted moist air directly into the soffit’s passive airflow. The three straight red arrows depict the exterior airflow entering the soffit’s passive airflow, which is then circulated throughout the attic to supply cool, fresh air. The two circled Red Arrows shows the moist air that is extracted through the eave vent mixing with the exterior cooler airflow being pushed back into the soffit by the soffit’s passive airflow, it condenses, creating mold and moisture damage within the soffit. The mold spores  are carried back into the attic space. The mold spores are then displaced by the air movement in the attic space and throughout attic’s ceiling, the walls, floor,  stored items and eventually through the small openings to the rest of the home.

In the image of the Utility Patented for its design and function, the Moisture Flow® Soffit Vent is positioned outside the passive airflow of the soffit. This unique design separates the cooler air entering the soffit for the attic’s supply of cool, fresh air from the extracted moist air being removed by the exhaust fan to the exterior, as required by code. This prevents mold spores from developing within the soffit and being carried back into the attic, is a common issue with all of the other soffit vents on the market. The Moisture Flow® Soffit Vent was designed using a system similar to that of a car’s exhaust system, which prevents toxic fumes from entering the cabin of a car. The toxic fumes are released through the tailpipe under the rear bumper, eliminating their re-entry into the cabin.

Mositure Flow® Features Revolutionizing Venting Through the Soffit

The Moisture Flow® Soffit Vent incorporates several innovative design features based on principles of airflow management, such as Bernoulli’s Principle and Newton’s theory of air resistance. Below is a summary of its key components:

Key Components of the Soffit Vent

  1. The Neck or Collar:
    • Located at the rear of the top housing, it connects the exhaust fan’s ductwork to the air inlet.
    • Positioned to optimize airflow by aligning directly with the Back Wall, reducing resistance and improving efficiency.
  2. The Back Wall:
    • Extracted moist air enters through the Collar and bounces off the Back Wall, exiting through the air outlet at the front.
    • This design minimizes resistance and prevents dead zones where mold could grow.
    • Ensures efficient air movement and reduces strain on the exhaust fan motor.
  3. Convex or V-Shape Bottom of the Lower Housing:
    • Located between the Back Wall and the Weephole.
    • Features an inclined pitch to direct condensation rapidly toward the Weephole, preventing mold growth.
  4. The Weephole:
    • Centrally located at the bottom of the housing under the Collar.
    • Facilitates immediate evacuation of moisture condensation, maintaining optimal airflow.
  5. The Damper:
    • Positioned near the Nose and handcrafted for durability in extreme temperatures.
    • Opens fully when the exhaust fan is in use, allowing airflow toward the Nose.
    • Closes when the fan is off, preventing reverse airflow, water, debris, insects, and animals from entering.
  6. The Nose:
    • A removable piece attached to the top and bottom housing for cleaning access.
    • Engineered to prevent air leakage and ensure proper alignment with the soffit.
    • Extends slightly past the fascia to prevent moist air from mixing with the soffit’s passive airflow, avoiding mold and moisture damage.
  7. The Grill:
    • Attached to the end of the Nose with three fasteners, allowing it to be opened and closed for cleaning.
    • Designed with grates to block debris and insects while maintaining optimal airflow.

Innovative Design Features

  • Airflow Optimization: The placement of the Collar and Back Wall eliminates dead zones and ensures efficient air movement.
  • Condensation Management: The V-shaped bottom and Weephole work together to prevent moisture buildup and mold.
  • Protection Against External Elements: The Damper and Grill prevent reverse airflow, debris, and pests from entering the vent.
  • Separation of Airflows: The Nose ensures extracted moist air does not mix with the soffit’s passive airflow, protecting the attic from moisture damage.

These features collectively enhance the performance and durability of the Soffit Vent, making it a superior solution for managing moisture and airflow in buildings.

The Moisture Flow® Soffit Vent’s unique feature and engineering are its combined design of an exhaust system and an air conditioning system. When installed, it separates the extracted moist air from the exhaust fan’s passive airflow of the soffit, allowing cool, fresh air to enter the attic for circulation. This keeps the attic cool and dry. The vent’s nose is located on the exterior side of the fascia, releasing the extracted moist air outside the soffit’s passive airflow, preventing it from being carried back into the attic.

In the diagram provided, traditional soffit vents, installed within the soffit’s width for the past four decades, are depicted. The moist air expelled by the exhaust fan is discharged directly into the passive airflow of the soffit. When cooler exterior air interacts with the released moist air, condensation occurs, resulting in the formation of mold originating in the soffit space and subsequently transported back into the attic by the backdraft of the passive airflow.

Moisture Flow® Manufacturing firmly believes, “Clean Air Quality Is Right and Not A  Privilege“

Moisture Flow® Manufacturing has dedicated years of research and development to address the issues associated with ineffective soffit vents, with the objective of resolving the problem rather than exacerbating it.

The Moisture Flow® Soffit Vent has gained recognition as the premier solution, having delivered over 10,000 Soffit Vents in the USA and Canada, thereby restoring the “black eye” in the building industry for over 40 years of inadequate soffit vents. This solution has been welcomed by both homeowners and builders alike.

Improper venting in soffits has a significant impact on indoor air quality. On October 25, 2012, Got Mold?, a leading environmental company, published findings in their study titled “Mold Costs More Than Half A Trillion Dollars Per Year!” The estimated economic impact of mold and moisture damage in the USA is $1 billion, based on 2012 figures. In Canada, this figure has surpassed $22 billion. The combined health-related costs in both countries exceed $90 billion, attributed to initial exposure symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, and eye irritation. Acute reactions can escalate to respiratory issues, asthma, and fatigue, while chronic exposure may damage major organs and potentially lead to death. This situation is particularly concerning for vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly, with similar effects observed in domestic animals.

Many individuals are unaware that the only medical professional qualified to treat mold exposure is an Environmental Doctor. Many patients spend months visiting primary care physicians who lack the necessary expertise to identify mold contamination, resulting in wasted time and money on ineffective medications. In the case of domestic pets, it is crucial to consult a veterinarian, who possesses the knowledge and experience to provide appropriate treatment. In both instances, the treatments can be lengthy and costly.

In 1991, Tom Silva, a renowned expert in home repairs, produced a video that highlighted the detrimental effects of improper venting of bathroom exhaust fans into the soffit. This issue has persisted for over three decades.

During that time, Tom Silva, Alex Schuts, and Henri de Marne, all of whom gained significant recognition through syndicated television and publications in the United States and Canada, became highly esteemed and trusted experts in home repairs. These three icons collectively exposed the severe problems that lead to mold and moisture damage in homes. In 2012, an international company published an article titled “Mold Damage Costs More Than Half a Trillion Dollars Per Year!”

Regrettably, over three decades later, manufacturers of soffit vents and regulatory building code guidelines have failed to address these issues. The only viable solutions to mitigate the substantial repair costs associated with these problems were the establishment of the Remediation Industry. The introduction of affordable soffit vents into the soffit resulted in the Remediation companies becoming a billion-dollar industry.

Manufacturers have utilized the building codes as a means of claiming “Code Compliant” status for their ineffective soffit vents and have strategically focused their sales efforts on solutions rather than addressing the underlying issues. The soffit vents sold on the market have negatively impacted the building industry, primarily at the expense of homeowners and builders.

Moisture Flow® Manufacturing has emerged as a solution after over three decades, providing homeowners and the building industry with a viable alternative. Homeowners are now empowered to protect their most valuable assets, namely their health and their homes.
